0700 hrs, depart Stratford, Conn, under beautiful sunshine and light winds out of the West,
a far cry from the day before. 1-2 ft seas all the way to New York. What a sight seeing
the New York high rises as we approched. Photos will be on the blog.
We came at the east river a the right time, the current was with us, and
so was the passage going down the East River, and to the infamous "HELL GATE"
The water gods (and good planning by Lane) were with us, as we travelled past Hell gate, and beyond,
travelling, get this 13.4 kts, yes 13.4 kts. I am sure that we could have shut off
the engine and did 6 kts just with the current.
Finally in New York Hbr, what a sight, you have to see it to believe it, boats
of all sizes and shapes, tour boats, tour helicopters flying all over the place.
Motored over to the "Statue of Liberty", lots of photos taken, and to say the
least it brought a lump to my throat, just being here and seeing it first hand,
and not on a photo or post card.
Ok now we were looking for a place to stay a couple of night and see "the sights"
Its Coloumbus Day here, like its our Thangiving at home
(TINA,YOU AND I CAN RELATE TO THIS!!!!!, REMEMBER WHEN)
Marinas all full up or cost $ 5.50 a ft, no way ho jeso. No Anchorage in NY Hbr, and we
could not get a mooring ball to save our life. At one point I thought
that we would have to stand watches and motor around all night, you
know back and forth, or circling the statue of Liberty, But then we would
probably be reported for "staking" the woman on the pedistal. Thown in
a NY jail,(Rikers's Island) oh my!!!
Well we finally got a spot at "Lincoln Harbour Yacht Club", a mere $3 a ft.
What a job getting in and tied up. You have never experienced the currents until
you have been to the good USA, with all its rivers running .
Not on common to have 6 kt currents. I tell you right now, we have it lucky in
the good old NS waters!! "thats for sure" as Scottie says.
Look at marinas in Great Kills lat 40 32 long 074 07 also for staging before Cape May you can anchor at Lat 40 28 Long 074 01
ReplyDeleteHi Scott & Lane,
ReplyDeleteIf you can not get into the 79th St. marina go over to sandy hook. There is a small marina there
that will let you anchor. You can take a bus into NY from there. It is also a good jumping off place for Cape May and Alantic City.
